Il Siberian Husky è un cane di taglia media di lontana origine siberiana. È una razza da lavoro anche se è diventato un ottimo cane da compagnia, fra i più apprezzati.
Storia
Il Siberian Husky è stato selezionato nella sua forma moderna negli Stati Uniti d'America a partire da cani originari della Siberia, dove era stato allevato per secoli dal popolo dei Ciukci per il traino delle slitte. All'inizio del '900 venne importato da Leonard Seppala in Alaska, dove si stavano iniziando a diffondere le gare tra slitte trainate da cani,nell'ambiente dei cercatori d'oro; per la sua taglia, che era piccola rispetto a quella dei cani allora utilizzati per il lavoro,i cani di Seppala furono derisi con il dispregiativo di “piccoli topi siberiani”. Ma ben presto, a seguito dei suoi grandi successi nelle gare, vennero rivalutati.
Un episodio che contribuì alla definitiva consacrazione di questa razza risale al 1925, quando nella città dell'Alaska Nome scoppiò un'epidemia di difterite: a causa delle pessime condizioni climatiche era impossibile raggiungere la città, e allora fu organizzata una staffetta di slitte che riuscirono a far giungere a Nome il siero anti-difterico. Aspetto fisico e caratteristiche
Pur essendo un cane da tiro, quindi robusto e muscoloso possiede una struttura elegante, leggera, e, soprattutto, ben proporzionata. Ha un cranio leggermente arrotondato che, insieme al muso che si restringe verso il tartufo, contribuisce a far risaltare il suo aspetto lupino.
